New York – New England District of Optimist International

It’s the start of another year for the New York/New England District Optimists and I look forward to working with each and every one of my fellow Optimists to make this year a success. My slogan for this year is “Smile with Optimism” and my Governor’s pin depicts a smiling mouth. I chose this slogan and pin because of the many smiles I’ve had myself over the years with my involvement with Optimists. I have met so many wonderful people and have shared with them so many memorable moments that I can’t help but smile when I think of the 26 years I’ve spent in this organization. Also, I thought it was cute that someone who has spent 31 years improving people’s teeth should have a pin depicting a glittering white smile. (Thanks to Barb for thinking of the glitter!!) Being an Optimist has meant not only being involved with the youth in the community, and all that entails, but also being involved with Optimists from other communities. Friendships have been formed and, as friends, we cheer each other’s successes, enjoy the camaraderie the club and district meetings offer and are there to console one another when faced with the loss of one of our own. One of my goals this year is to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of my fellow Optimists. We all have done so much for our communities over the years and, somehow, in the face of declining membership and the apathy we sometimes feel from our own communities and the world around us, we continue to do so. Call us stubborn. Call us idealists. Call us the throwbacks to times past. Whatever your personal reasons are for being an Optimist, the fact of the matter is that you are an Optimist and you care about the world we live in. I think that’s worth celebrating!! So, when you are looking to recruit a new member, or start a new club, say with pride “I am an Optimist” Then, give a big smile!!
